What AI will actually do for a small business by 2027
QUICK ANSWER
By 2027 the change is not that AI gets cleverer. It is that AI stops answering and starts doing - booking, chasing, filing, replying. That is already shipping: 58% of US small employers told the SBE Council in September 2026 that they use AI agents already, and another 14% are planning to. The thing to watch is not the model. It is what you let an agent touch.
Shipping today
Not promises. These exist and you can buy them this month.
- AI answering the phone. Receptionist plans from $29 to $199 a month, unlimited or metered, with transfers to a human when the caller gets complicated. We priced nine of them in our cost guide.
- AI reading the support queue. Vendors publish a cost per resolution now - $0.99 at Intercom's Fin, $0.60 to $1.50 at Gorgias - against $6 to $13.50 for a person per contact.
- Agents inside the tools you already pay for. Shopify, Intuit, Slack, Dropbox and Atlassian now ship agent add-ons rather than asking you to move your data somewhere new.
- Voice agents for SMB phone lines. Mainstream phone platforms sell an AI voice agent with CRM integration and human handoff on their normal business plans, not as an enterprise project.
Announced, not yet normal
- Meta's Muse for Small Business (announced 29 September 2026) is Meta's push to sell workplace AI to the same businesses that already buy its ads. It is a name to watch, not a tool with a track record yet.
- OpenAI's small business programme bundles training webinars with partner agents and offers from Dropbox, Shopify, Intuit, Slack, Atlassian and Wix, built around its ChatGPT Work agent for multi-step tasks. Announced, rolling out, uneven by country.
- Accounting automation is arriving through bookkeeping platforms partnering with AI vendors rather than through AI companies. Expect the accounting suites you already use to add agents inside their own interface.
In research
- Agents that hold your credentials. The hard problem nobody has solved publicly is letting an agent log into your accounts and spend money safely. Expect permission layers and spend limits, not fully autonomous spending.
- Long-running agents. Models that keep working on a task for hours, checking their own output. Useful for research and reconciliation work; unproven on anything customer-facing.
Speculation - treat this as a rumour
- "Personal agent platforms" from the big labs. In October 2026 a single social account claimed OpenAI, Anthropic and Cognition would ship personal agent platforms within a month. There is no primary source for it. We include it only because you will see it repeated; do not plan around it.
The catch
- An agent that acts can act wrongly. A chatbot that says something silly costs you a conversation. An agent that emails your customers, changes your calendar or files your tax data costs you money and trust.
- Access is the risk surface. Every account you connect is a door. Give agents the smallest access that does the job, and never an account that can move money without a second check.
- Pricing is still usage-shaped. Agents bill per resolution, per call, per task or per unique customer. Your busiest month sets the ceiling, not your average.
- The labour saving is real but partial. These tools remove the repetitive half of a job and leave the judgement half. A team of three does not become a team of one; it stops drowning.
What to do between now and 2027
- Pick one job, not five. The phone, the support inbox, or the invoice chase. Run it for a month against a real number before you add a second.
- Write down what the agent may not do. No refunds above a set amount. No promises on dates. No changes to pricing. A written limit is what keeps an agent from becoming an incident.
- Keep a human on the exit. If the tool cannot hand a difficult conversation to a person with context, it is not ready for your customers.
- Re-price every quarter. These plans change monthly. A plan that was cheap in October may be the expensive one by January.
