Google put ads inside AI Mode in 10 more countries, the week its ad growth slowed to 12%
The short answer
Google expanded sponsored placements inside AI Mode to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore on 28 October, and added ads inside follow-up questions in the United States. The announcement came on the same earnings call where Google reported search ad growth of 12 percent, down from 17 percent the quarter before, because AI Mode monetises worse than the classic results page.
What changed
Ads inside AI Mode are now live in ten more markets: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Google says Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom follow in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The more interesting change is in the United States, where Google launched multiturn ads. That means a sponsored placement can appear not only on the first answer but inside the follow-up questions you type afterwards. Until now a conversation could move two or three turns without an ad appearing at all.
Google says the ads are labelled Sponsored, and that in AI Mode queries run about three times longer than a normal search.
Why it is happening now
Follow the money. Alphabet reported third quarter revenue of 127.6 billion dollars, up 25 percent, but search advertising grew 12 percent against 17 percent in the second quarter and 19 percent in the first. Chief business officer Philipp Schindler put the reason plainly on the call: strong AI Mode query growth hurt search revenue growth because AI Mode monetises less well than the old results page.
Alphabet shares fell about 8 percent after the results, and the company reported negative free cash flow of 9.07 billion dollars for the quarter. Capital spending stays flat for 2026 and is expected to rise significantly in 2027.
Read together, those two facts explain the expansion: AI answers take traffic that used to produce clicks on ads, so the ads have to move inside the answer itself.
What it means for you
If you use AI Mode to compare products or research a purchase, expect sponsored blocks in the middle of the conversation, not just at the top of a page. The label is there, but it now sits inside text that reads like advice.
If you publish a site, this is the part that matters: the format that pays is the one where a business can be inserted into a conversation, not the one where a reader clicks a blue link. That shift has been coming since AI Overviews. The numbers this week made it official.
For advertisers, multiturn ads mean the follow-up question is now inventory. Budgets that assumed one impression per search will need a second look at how often a brand can appear in a single conversation.
What to watch next
Brazil, Mexico and the UK in the fourth quarter, and whether the 12 percent figure recovers once AI Mode ads are running in more markets. Google also said its first party model APIs now process nearly 32 billion tokens a minute, 40 percent more than last quarter, which is the demand side of the same story.

Questions people are asking
Are ads in AI Mode shown everywhere now?
No. They are live in the United States and ten more countries from 28 October. Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
How do I tell an ad from an answer?
Google labels them Sponsored. The label sits above the sponsored block inside the conversation, so it appears mid-answer rather than at the top of the page.
What are multiturn ads?
Sponsored placements that can appear inside follow-up questions in a conversation, not only on the first answer. They launched in the United States on 28 October.
Does this affect organic traffic to websites?
It adds pressure. AI Mode answers already reduce clicks to sites, and the ad expansion shows Google is monetising the conversation directly instead of sending people out.
Why did Alphabet shares fall if revenue grew 25 percent?
Because search ad growth slowed to 12 percent, capital spending is set to rise, and the quarter showed negative free cash flow of 9.07 billion dollars. Investors read that as the cost of the AI build outpacing the payoff.
