Oracle put ChatGPT and Codex inside its business apps, and started buying Google chips
The short answer
Oracle and OpenAI expanded their partnership on 27 October. Oracle is building Oracle AI Workspace so people can run approved Oracle workflows inside ChatGPT, and it is putting OpenAI models into its own applications. Separately, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure will offer Google TPUs, OpenAI's new chip and Cerebras hardware alongside existing accelerators.
What was announced
Three pieces. Oracle AI Workspace, in development, is meant to let a person describe what they need and get it done across Oracle's finance, procurement and planning applications, inside the organisation's own permissions and approvals.
Second, Oracle is shipping OpenAI models inside its products, including an SMB bundle that pairs ChatGPT Business and Codex with Oracle applications and cloud credits.
Third, procurement. US customers can buy API, Codex and ChatGPT Work through Oracle Marketplace using existing contracts and eligible Oracle credits.
The chip line is the interesting one
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure will add Google TPUs, OpenAI's new accelerator and Cerebras hardware. A database company adding three non-Nvidia options in one announcement is a supply decision, not a marketing one. It tells you the constraint on AI capacity is still silicon, and that buyers are willing to spread across vendors to get it.
The numbers Oracle disclosed
130,000 active ChatGPT users and more than 95,000 active Codex users inside Oracle. Its recruiting team uses ChatGPT Work for market research that used to take two to four days, and now takes 15 to 20 minutes to prepare.
Read those as adoption numbers, not payoff numbers. They prove people log in. They do not prove the output is better, and the 15 to 20 minutes is preparation time, which is one step in a longer process.
Why it matters beyond Oracle
This is the shape enterprise AI is taking: the assistant becomes a front door to systems that already exist, with the permissions model doing the work. Oracle's line about "unified sign-in, access governed by each organisation's permissions" is the whole pitch, and the whole risk.
If the agent acts inside finance and procurement, the questions are the ones we keep writing about: what scope, what approval gate, what log, what revoke. An agent that can read a purchase order and draft one is useful. An agent that can approve one is a governance decision disguised as a feature.
Questions people ask
Is Oracle AI Workspace available now?
Oracle describes it as in development. The OpenAI access through Oracle Marketplace is available to US customers now.
Does this replace ChatGPT Enterprise?
No. It is a route to OpenAI models inside Oracle's applications and procurement, not a replacement for a direct agreement.
Why does the chip lineup matter to a buyer?
Capacity and price. More accelerator options means less exposure to one supplier's allocation, and Oracle is signalling it can keep serving demand.
