The short answer

Reddit's third quarter letter says search referral traffic fell meaningfully, and in October the drop reached more than one million referrals a week on average. Chief executive Steve Huffman told investors plainly that AI Mode does not drive traffic, for Reddit or anyone else. Shares fell 18 percent after hours, US daily users dropped 2 percent, and the company now plans to require sign-ins for most content to slow scraping.

What Reddit said

In the third quarter shareholder letter, Reddit reported that search referral traffic was down meaningfully and that the decline accelerated later in the quarter. The sharper number came from October: more than one million referrals lost on average each week.

On the earnings call, Huffman did not present this as a Reddit problem. He called it a change in how Google works. His line, quoted by The Verge: "The reality is, AI Mode does not drive traffic. Not for us, and not to anybody."

Financially it landed hard. Revenue guidance for the fourth quarter came in at 1.00 to 1.03 billion dollars against roughly 1.05 billion expected, and the stock fell 18 percent in extended trading after closing at 129.60. US daily active unique visitors fell 2 percent to 50.7 million, the first decline since the company listed in 2024.

The response: make people sign in

Reddit's plan is to require a login for most content. The stated reason is scraping, and the practical effect is that AI crawlers and logged-out readers both get less. Huffman also warned that total daily visitors could fall by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter if referrals keep sliding.

That is a real trade. Reddit is choosing a smaller, signed-in audience it can measure and monetise over a larger anonymous one that Google's AI answers were quietly hollowing out anyway.

Why this matters beyond Reddit

Reddit is the loudest example, not the only one. A preregistered experiment with 1,100 Google users published in August found that AI Mode cut referral clicks to outside websites by 18.8 percentage points compared with normal search. Reddit lost the most at 21.2 points, news sites 12.5 and Wikipedia 9.9.

If you run a site that depends on search clicks, the direction is set: Google is answering inside the page, and the click is becoming optional. The sites that survive it are the ones people come back to by name, by email or by app, not the ones that rely on a query they did not own.

We covered the other half of this on Thursday, when Google expanded ads inside AI Mode to ten more countries. Same cause, different symptom: the answer page is where the money and attention now stay.

What to watch next

Whether the sign-in requirement actually holds up with Google's crawlers, and whether other large sites copy it. Reddit licenses its data to both OpenAI and Google, and is suing Anthropic, Perplexity and three scraping firms, so the negotiation over who gets the content is far from settled.

Questions people are asking

Did Reddit really lose a million visits a week?

It lost more than one million search referrals a week on average during October, according to its own shareholder letter. That is referrals from search engines, not total users.

Why is Reddit adding a login wall?

Reddit says the goal is to curb scraping. It also reduces the value of anonymous traffic that arrives from AI answers and does not convert.

Is this only a Reddit problem?

No. An August 2026 experiment with 1,100 users found AI Mode cut outbound clicks by 18.8 percentage points across sites, with news sites losing 12.5.

Does Google still crawl Reddit?

Huffman said Google is crawling as hard as ever, so demand has not dropped. What changed is that the answer is served inside Google instead of as a click.

What should a small publisher do?

Build a channel you own, email or app, measure impressions against clicks, and stop treating a search click as a guaranteed visit.
