The short answer

The software is free. The server is not. The n8n Community Edition ships without a licence fee and without execution limits, so the money you spend goes to the machine it runs on and to the time you spend keeping it alive.

In practice that is about 5 to 15 euros a month for a small, real setup: 4 to 12 euros for a VPS that handles a normal automation load, roughly 1 euro a month for a domain, and free SSL. If you already have a server running other things, your marginal cost is close to zero.

What the free licence does not include

Self-hosting does not remove work, it moves it to you. There is no one to patch a security release at 2am, no managed uptime, no queue for a dead worker. If a workflow breaks at the weekend, that is your weekend.

This is the honest trade: you are buying the licence fee difference with your own maintenance time. For a solo operator with a handful of workflows, that trade usually wins. For a team that bills by the hour, it often does not.

When paying is the sensible choice

Two cases. First, when you need the governance features that sit behind the Enterprise licence, such as single sign-on, audit trails and environment policies. Second, when the monthly difference is smaller than an hour of your working time, which is exactly the point where running your own server stops being cheaper in any meaningful sense.

Questions people ask

Does self-hosting n8n cost money?

Not for the software. The Community Edition has no licence fee. You pay for the server it runs on, about 4 to 12 euros a month, plus your own time for updates and backups.

How much does self-hosting n8n cost per month?

Around 5 to 15 euros all in for a small setup, and close to zero if you already run a server. The variable that decides it is your maintenance time, not the licence.

When is n8n Cloud cheaper?

When your time is worth more than the difference, or when you need managed uptime. Cloud starts at 24 euros a month and rises to 800 euros at 40,000 executions.
