Local Whisper vs cloud transcription: the real cost per hour
The short answer
Local Whisper has no per minute charge, so the software costs the same for one hour of audio or one hundred. Cloud transcription runs about $12 per hour pay as you go, and human transcription runs $119.40 per hour.
Cost per hour of audio
| Option | Cost per hour | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Local Whisper | $0software | Your machine, your time, no editor |
| Cloud pay as you go | $12per 60 minutes | Nothing, but metered forever |
| Cloud subscription | $8.50/mobilled yearly | Covered by the monthly allowance |
| Human transcription | $119.40at $1.99 per minute | Money, in exchange for accuracy on hard audio |
Those four rows are the whole decision. At ten hours of audio a month, local costs zero and cloud pay as you go costs $120. At one hour a month, a subscription is cheaper than paying by the minute and easier than running software.
What local actually costs you
Not the licence. Three other things:
- The machine. Around 8GB of RAM runs the small quantised models, 16GB is comfortable, and the larger models want 32GB or a GPU with 8 to 16GB of video memory. If you already own a laptop that clears that bar, the marginal cost is close to nothing.
- The time. On CPU only hardware, transcription takes longer than the audio itself. An hour long interview can take an hour or more to process, and you still have to proofread it.
- The missing features. Cloud tools bundle the editor, speaker labels, exports and search. Local Whisper gives you a transcript file.
Where local wins
- Confidential audio. Client calls, medical notes, legal interviews and anything covered by a confidentiality clause should not be uploaded to a third party at all.
- Volume. At 50 hours a month, cloud pay as you go is $600; local is still zero.
- Offline work, and files you cannot upload because of a policy rather than a preference.
Where cloud wins
When you need speaker labels, a shareable link, an editor that lets someone else fix the transcript, or search across hundreds of past recordings. Also when your machine is below the memory threshold, or when the audio is bad enough that accuracy matters more than cost.
And human transcription still wins in one case: audio you cannot afford to get wrong, with multiple speakers, accents and background noise. At $1.99 a minute it is expensive, and for a legal or medical transcript it is the cheaper option in real terms.
How to choose in one minute
- If the audio is confidential, go local. No debate.
- If you record fewer than five hours a month, take the cheap subscription and stop thinking about it.
- If you record more than ten hours a month and own a machine with 16GB of RAM, install Whisper and test one file end to end before you commit.

Questions people ask
Is local Whisper really free?
The software is, and there is no per minute charge. What you pay is the machine, and on CPU only hardware it takes longer than the audio itself.
How much does cloud transcription cost per hour?
About $12 per hour of audio pay as you go, or about $8.50 a month on an annual subscription. Human transcription is about $119.40 an hour at $1.99 a minute.
When should I use cloud instead?
When you need speaker labels, an editor and search, or when your machine has less than about 8GB of RAM.
