Barclays is cutting 5,000 jobs in an AI-driven cost push, and support roles take the hit
The short answer
Barclays is cutting about 5,000 jobs, roughly 5 percent of staff, in a push to lower costs with AI. It arrived the same week Goldman Sachs said AI could displace up to 9 percent of workers, adding that the worst of it probably waits for the next recession.
What Barclays announced
The New York Times reported on 22 October that Barclays will cut about 5,000 jobs in an AI-driven push to lower costs. Reuters' running factbox puts the figure near 5 percent of the workforce, concentrated in support functions rather than revenue roles.
That detail matters more than the headline. Banks have been cutting operations, compliance admin and service roles for two years while adding engineers and model risk staff. The net number moves slowly; the composition of the workforce changes quickly.
The Goldman number, read properly
Also this week, Goldman Sachs said AI could displace up to 9 percent of workers, and that the hit probably waits for the next recession. Fortune reported the forecast on 22 October.
That second clause is the one to hold on to. A displacement estimate is a statement about capability, not about timing. Companies rarely cut deep in a strong quarter, because revenue still needs the staff. They cut when a downturn gives them a reason, and AI gives them a justification.

Why this one is different from the 2026 tech cuts
Most of the layoff coverage this year has been tech companies cutting engineering and support after overhiring in 2022. A bank cutting 5,000 support roles is a different test: banking is regulated, the work is documented, and the error cost is high.
If AI can absorb support work inside a bank under supervision, the same case becomes much easier to make in insurance, healthcare admin and government processing, which are larger employers.
The counter-evidence, again
Goldman's own research earlier found AI removing about 16,000 monthly payroll jobs while adding about 9,000, a net loss far smaller than announcement counts imply. PwC's 2026 AI Jobs Barometer found headcount growing faster at the most AI-exposed companies than the least exposed.
Both are consistent with what is happening here. The jobs being cut are support roles. The jobs being added are technical and supervisory. The people affected are usually not the people hired.
What to watch next quarter
Three numbers tell you whether this is a one-off or a pattern: whether Barclays re-hires into AI or risk roles within six months, whether other UK and US banks follow with similar percentage cuts, and whether the AI-cited share of Challenger's monthly count keeps climbing past 24 percent.
