Microsoft's 60,000 buyouts: read the eligibility line, not the headline
The short answer
60,000 is the number eligible, not the number leaving. The offer is voluntary, the deadline to decide is early December, and the exit date is 31 December. The number that matters is the take-up rate: in April, more than 30 percent of those eligible accepted.
The three numbers people mix up
Eligible: around 60,000, across the US, Canada, India and the UK. Workforce: 223,000, so the offer reaches about 27 percent of it. Accepting: unknown until December.
Headlines that say "Microsoft cuts 60,000" are describing a maximum, not a decision. The company says it has no target this time.
Why the take-up rate is the real signal
The April voluntary retirement program reached about 7 percent of US staff and more than 30 percent of those eligible took it. This offer is wider, climbs higher up the ladder, and lands after a year of AI tools being pushed into engineering, sales and supply chain work.
If a similar share accepts, roughly 18,000 people leave by choice. If far fewer accept, Microsoft has not reduced cost and will be back with something else in the first quarter.
What it says about the work
Capital spending above $50 billion a quarter is not a story about headcount. It is a story about where the money goes: data centres and GPUs, not salaries. Free cash flow fell 23 percent, so the two lines have to be balanced somewhere.
The honest read is that the layer of work which mostly moves information between systems is being absorbed by tools, and the roles that remain are the ones where a person decides, checks or carries accountability. That has been true in every automation cycle, and it is happening faster here because the tool is general.
If you are inside a company like this
Two questions worth answering this week. Which of my tasks would still exist if the software could read and write every system I touch? And what do I decide that software cannot yet decide?
The second question is the one that buys time, and it is the one most people never write down.
Questions people ask
Will everyone who is eligible be asked to leave?
No. It is voluntary. People apply, and Microsoft decides whether to accept the application.
Does this include senior staff?
It reaches vice president level this time, higher than the April program, which stopped at senior director.
